what is chakshu? eyes? Is the word 'chashma' derived from chakshu?

Yes, chakshu means eye in sanskrit. I believe Akshi as well. (It is surprising how I remember these synonyms from so long ago.)

Chashma doesnt sound like it came from chakshu, but nice try :) I looked it up online and only found references to a Persian meaning.

But, there is a very nice root to the God "Jupiter" with a connection to Sanskrit. Anybody wants to take a guess ?

'Dyauá¹£ pitar' (aka. 'sky father') from the Rig Veda?

(no no no... no guesses... I cheated.. I looked it up :) )

Bruhaspati... but I did not get the connection Bruhaspati -> Chakshu

ah, Sandeep. There is no connection from bruhaspati to chakshu, it just so happened that I was reading about Jupiter at that time, and we were talking about roots of words.

Dyauhu pitar is correct ! I got to know this in my current read "Idiot's guide to Hinduism" (ya ya, I know)
